Phil has been a Chartered Civil Engineer since 1983 with extensive experience of highway design requirements arising from development proposals, and is familiar with the practical and political challenges associated with the development of alternative design ideas. Phil completed a 2006 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship in Western Europe to study ‘Sympathetic Highway Design’ with particular emphasis on Shared Space. His essay ‘City Planning as if people mattered’ won the 2007 Ecologist Magazine Essay Prize.
